Seven

An hour later, Merrick and Aly started their run together. Within five minutes Aly knew there was no chance of keeping up with Merrick and quickly waved him on, immediately slowing down to get her breath back.

When she was sure she wasn’t dying, she carried on with her normal, plod-plod three-mile route, stopping to look at the view whenever she felt a little out of breath. She exercised because she knew she should, not because she enjoyed it, as Merrick seemed to do.

Despite knowing that he’d intended to do a much longer run than her, Merrick was waiting for her when she emerged from the trail that led into the woods around Avangeline’s estate. While her hair was falling out of her tail and she was glowing with perspiration, he barely looked like he’d done any exercise at all.

“What?” Merrick asked when he saw her frown.

She dragged her finger through the air, gesturing to his whole body from his feet to his head. “At least have the dignity to sweat a little, Knowles.”

“I’d need to go a lot harder and longer than that.” He rubbed the back of his neck, the muscles in his bicep contracting and sending a spike of lust down her spine. Man, he was hot. She could think of nothing she’d rather do than take him back to bed.

They’d been awake until late, had made love twice, and fooled around some more after that, but she still felt like she was standing on the edge of a bridge, waiting to bungee jump. Craving the rush. Unbelievably excited at the thought of being with him. How long would this feeling last? Two weeks, ten months, ten years? It didn’t matter, she reminded herself. It all would be over soon, and they’d soon go their separate ways.

She couldn’t afford to be anything but clear-eyed about where they were and weren’t going. They were having a fling; she knew this, so why did she keep going off on a tangent?

It was most annoying.

Merrick nodded at the house. “Shall we pop in on Mom, and have a cup of coffee?”

Aly knew what he was really after and it wasn’t coffee. Or not only coffee. “You know that Jace only makes croissants when there are visitors, and you are hoping to snag one.”

“Or three or four,” Merrick agreed, placing his hand on her lower back. She liked feeling it there, warm and steady.

“I could eat a croissant,” Aly agreed. Or two.

“So, I spoke to the mechanic who worked on Jesse’s plane,” Merrick told her, after a few minutes of comfortable silence.

“Derek Fields?”

“That’s him.”

“He was interviewed by journalists at the time of the crash. I picked up his name from the articles. I tried to call him, but he wouldn’t talk to me.” Aly pulled a face.

“He put the phone down on me as well but I found out where he works. I think we should go to the airfield and see what he has to say.”

Aly stopped and laid a hand on his arm.
